A very normal evening, the married couple Helen and Danny share a meal at home. Suddenly Helen’s brother Liam is standing in the room, covered in blood. He says he was helping a boy who was stabbed. But where is the boy? Shouldn’t the police be involved? As Danny becomes increasingly irritated by the contradictions in Liam’s story, Helen defends her brother. She has felt responsible for him since the death of their parents; he is more important to her than a victim she has never met.
Dennis Kelly’s chamber drama Waisen (Orphans) poses societal questions about guilt, responsibility and civil courage while simultaneously revealing how quickly values such as morals and a readiness to help are tossed aside as soon as one’s own interests and entanglements become paramount.
